Keywords: effectiveness, crossword puzzle, vocabulary mastery A crossword puzzle is a type of word game usually consisting of white and black boxes forming a rectangular grid. Each white square can be filled with letters to form a word, and each column or row in the box has a written clue containing definitions or hints for the words to be filled in. Playing crossword puzzles helps increase the player's vocabulary as they are exposed to various dishes and terms. Crosswords often include questions or clues related to different areas of knowledge to be used as educational tools. The researcher focused on one research problem formulation: Is there any significant difference in the student's vocabulary scores before and after being taught using crossword puzzles in the eighth grade at MTs Asy Syafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung? This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of using crossword puzzles on eighth-grade students’ vocabulary mastery at MTs Asy Syafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung. The research design is an experimental design with a quantitative approach. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students of MTs Asy Syafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung. The sample of this study was class VIII B, consisting of 16 students. Researchers use a written test in the form of multiple-choice tests. Pre-test and post-test are the tests used in this study. Data analysis of this study used an independent sample t-test. The results of this study indicate that using crossword puzzle media is effective for vocabulary proficiency. It can be seen from the average value of students' pre-tests, 71.00, and the average value of students' post-tests, 85.25. The statistically significant (2-tailed) results of the Independent Sample T-test. The Ttest states that the significance value is 0.000. It can be interpreted that the significance value is smaller than the significance level (0.000 <0.05). As a result, there is a significant difference in students' vocabulary proficiency before and after the treatment using crossword puzzles. Therefore, the use of crossword puzzles on vocabulary proficiency of class VIII students of MTs Asy Syafi'iyah Gondang Tulungagung is effective. In other words, crossword puzzles can be used as an alternative media to train vocabulary proficiency for students at the junior high school level.
