Ida Isnawati, M.Pd Keywords: Confidence, Reading Comprehension, Correlation, Education, SMA Negeri 1 Gondang Many students in Indonesia have difficulty in reading English texts and have difficulty understanding what they read. This can be caused by various factors, including students' perceptions of English subjects and their confidence levels. A high level of self-confidence can increase students' learning motivation, which in turn can improve their academic performance. Therefore, establishing a high level of self-confidence in students is crucial in improving their learning achievement. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation between students' confidence in reading and their reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Gondang. The problem studied is the relationship between students' confidence level in reading and their ability to understand reading texts. The purpose of this study is to find answers to the formulated problems, namely to find out whether there is a significant correlation between the two variables. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The sample of this study consisted of 90 tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Gondang in the 2023/2024 academic year, taken from a total population of 360 students. Data were collected using a questionnaire to measure students' confidence level in reading and a reading comprehension test in the form of 30 multiple choice questions about recount text. The data were analysed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results showed that there was a significant moderate correlation between students' confidence in reading and their reading comprehension with a correlation coefficient value of 0.591, which falls within the range of 0.4 to 0.6 indicating a positive relationship between the two variables. The significance value obtained is 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05, so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This means that the higher students' confidence in reading, the better their reading comprehension. This study is in line with the findings of previous studies that show the important role of self-confidence in improving students' reading skills. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that schools pay more attention to developing students' self-confidence in reading activities, which is expected to improve their reading comprehension skills.
