Advisor Nuriyatul Hamidah,S.S., M.Pd Keyword: grammar mastery, writing achievement, recount text Writing is a very important skill in communication. Writing is the activity of producing text in writing. One of the texts taught in school is recount text and students are expected to be able to tell their experiences according to text structure and language features. Grammar becomes a very important component in writing. Without appropriate grammar mastery, the students will not be able to produce appropriate written text. This study aims to find out whether students' grammar mastery correlates with students' achievement in writing recount text. This research was a correlation study that conducted in 8 grade who had studied recount text. 36 students from 8 D were selected as the sample using purposive sampling technique. To obtain the data, two tests were conducted. The first was a grammar mastery test. There were 20 items in the form of multiple choices. While the second test was to find out the students' achievement in writing recount text. This test is in the form of an essay containing 10-20 sentences. After that, the scores were calculated with SPSS. The result of the calculation indicated that there is a correlation between variable x and variable y. The correlation coefficient was 0.793 which is closer to 1 than to 0. The significance score (N.Sig-2 tailed) was 0,000 wich is less than 0,050. It means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. From this research, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between grammar mastery and their achievement in writing recount text. Since grammar mastery give a big impact on students’ writing achievement, it is very important for teachers to help students with good grammar mastery to make their writing more effective.
