Keywords: speaking anxiety, classroom presentation, speaking anxiety causes, students’ speaking anxiety strategies Speaking is one of the most significant skills of language learning. In order to communicate well in a foreign language, students should be able to speak English clearly and fluently. Speaking ability is the main part in communication, but sometimes students have problem in delivering their speaking that is anxiety. Speaking anxiety can impede their ability to perform classroom presentation successfully in term of their speaking performance. Speaking anxiety is categorized as a psychological problem that can occur to everyone. It is a feeling that is closely related to psychological system of individuals who are experiencing beyond what it would normally be. Not all of the students have the same causes of their anxiety, but some are had different. In order to minimize their speaking anxiety, the students need appropriate strategies. The statement of the research problems are: 1) What are the causes of speaking anxiety in classroom presentation encountered by the sixth semester students of English Education Department at IAIN Tulungagung? 2) What are the students’ strategies to minimize their speaking anxiety in classroom presentation? The research method used in this study was descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data of this study were the selected information and description about the causes of speaking anxiety and strategies to minimize speaking anxiety used by the students in classroom presentation. The data in this study were in the forms of statements and descriptions and they belonged to qualitative data. The procedures of collecting data were: 1) the researcher collected the data through observation and interview, 2) the researcher transcribed, selected and focused on the data by referring to the research problems, 3) the researcher displayed those selected data in the form of narrative or description, 4) drawing conclusion based on the analyzed data. The findings showed that the factors caused speaking anxiety in classroom presentation were: self-perceptions, lack of confidence, fear of negative evaluation, lack of preparation, fear of making mistake, low proficiency in speaking English, and inability to pronounce strange sounds and words. Meanwhile, the strategies which were used by the students in minimizing their anxiety were: preparation, relaxation, positive thinking and peer helping. Furthermore, those strategies could minimize the students’ speaking anxiety. Moreover, this study is expected could give a beneficial for the students, English lecturers, and future researchers.
