Abstract
Reading is one of the fundamental skills in English that plays a crucial role in academic success. However, many students still face difficulties in understanding reading materials due to the lack of engaging and suitable learning media. Therefore, the use of digital comics is considered as an alternative media to help improve students’ reading skills in a more interesting and interactive way. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of using digital comics in enhancing the reading skill of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol. The formulation of the research problem is: “Is there any significant difference in students’ scores before and after being taught using digital comics toward the English reading skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol?” Based on that, the purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using digital comics toward the English reading skills of grade VII student at SMP Negeri 01 Sumbergempol. This research used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design, namely the one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study was all seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol in the academic year 2024/2025. The sample consisted of 38 students from class VII-H, selected based on purposive sampling. The research instruments used were pre-tests and post-tests. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test in SPSS version 29.0. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading scores after being taught using digital comics. The average pre-test score was 70.71, and it increased to 77.61 in the post-test. The significance value obtained was 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the use of digital comics was effective in improving the reading skill of seventh-grade students. Digital comics can be used as an innovative and enjoyable media to support reading comprehension in English learning.
