Abstract

This study aims to analyse the application of independent learning by students in learning English vocabulary utilizing Instagram platform, especially on the @jagobahasa.com account, without following the structured steps in the independent learning method. Although the @jagobahasa.com Instagram account provides interesting and relevant learning content, students do not use clear guidelines in accordance with the principles of the independent learning method, which should include directed steps in the independent learning process. The method used in this research is qualitative method with case study design. There were three respondents involved in this research who were selected using selection of subject. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and questionnaires to obtain information related to the habits, strategies, and impacts of using the @jagobahasa.com Instagram account on the acquisition of English vocabulary. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic analysis approach, which emphasises on identifying patterns and themes that emerge from the collected data. The results show that although students actively use Instagram as a learning resource, they lack a clear structure and strategy in implementing independent learning. This leads to the lack of effective and planned vocabulary acquisition. This research suggests the importance of integrating more purposeful self-learning methods in the use of social media, so that students can maximise the potential of the platform to improve their language skills. This research contributes to the understanding of the role of social media, especially Instagram, in foreign language learning in the digital era. The research revealed that students employed a range of independent learning strategies to enhance their vocabulary acquisition through Instagram. Many participants used visual aids like sticky notes to write down new vocabulary, reinforcing their learning through repetitive visual exposure. Others preferred auditory methods, such as constructing sentences verbally, which allowed them to internalize vocabulary through speech. Consistent written reviews emerged as a traditional yet effective method employed by students to revisit and reinforce their learning. These strategies demonstrate the adaptability of self-regulated learning, allowing learners to tailor their approaches according to personal preferences. This flexibility is mirrored in the design of Instagram, which offers on-demand, multimedia-rich content from @jagobahasacom that caters to various learning styles, enabling students to engage with material in a manner that suits them best. However, while the advantages of utilizing Independent Learning Method Instagram for vocabulary acquisition were evident, participants also faced certain challenges. The brevity of posts often limited in-depth explanations of complex vocabulary, suggesting that while Instagram serves as an effective entry point for learning, it may not provide the comprehensive mastery required for deeper understanding.
