Abstract
English as a second language requires the students to be able to speak, listen, read and write. However, many students think that the most difficult skill is reading. Learning to read fluently and how to develop ideas are the most difficult problem of reading. Because learning language, especially reading skill can’t be done at one time. Students should practice to generate and develop ideas continuously. The implementation of the teaching process design is one of the most important in teaching and learning process, especially in choosing the appropriate technique in teaching reading. There are some techniques proposed by the expert in teaching reading. This study was conducted to find out the following the question, “How can skimming technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text?” The objective of the research, this study was intended to know how skimming technique could improve the second year students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at SMPN 1 Pogalan. Research methods: (1) the design of the study was model classroom action research from Kemmis and McTaggart (1988), (2) the research subject was an eight grade F student at SMPN 1 Pogalan, (3) this research was carried out of two cycles, each cycle consisted of three meetings. The research procedure of each cycle consisted of four stages namely: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. (4) the success criteria in this study are if 75% of students are able to get a score of ≥75 on the test conducted, (5) the research instruments used include observation sheets, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. The writer to do the post-test to know the students’ ability before and after being taught using narrative text in skimming technique. Based on the research finding, in preliminary study the researcher found that the students’ ability in reading comprehension in narrative text was poor. The results showed that the average score of students in preliminary study was 60, a total of 25% students passed and 75% failed the test. in cycle 1 the average score of the students is 73, a total of 56% students passed the test and 43% of students failed the test. the criteria of success have not been achieved in cycle 1 because students who pass the test are less than 75% so cycle 2 needs to be implemented. In cycle 2, the average score of students is 81, a total of 84% of students passed the test and 15% of students failed the test. the result of the test in cycle 2 could reach the criteria of success. So, the study was stopped in cycle 2. Based on the result of the study, it could be concluded that skimming technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension.
