Abstract

Vocabulary plays a vital role in learning English, especially for vocational high school students in the Light Vehicle Engineering (TKR) program who need job-related language skills. To address low motivation observed during internship, this study investigates the use of Wordwall to enhance vocabulary mastery and engagement in an ESP context. This study aims to answer the research question, "Is the use of Wordwall effective on increasing ESP vocabulary achievement for tenth graders of TKR at SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung?" Therefore, the purpose of this study is evaluating the effectiveness of Wordwall as a digital tool to improve vocabulary achievement in the Light Vehicle Engineering program. This study emphasizes the importance of vocabulary in vocational English, especially for TKR students who need technical terms for workplace communication. It focuses on three meaning-based aspects—translation, definition, and contextual appropriateness—using a combination of Wordwall and the K.I.M. Vocabulary Technique. Wordwall offers interactive learning through games-based activity, while the K.I.M. strategy (Keyword, Information, Memory/clue) supports retention to reinforce contextual understanding. By integrating both, this study aims to enhance students‘ ESP vocabulary mastery and motivation in an automotive context. This study used a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample, 34 students from class X TKR 2, was selected using puposive sampling technique. The data were collected through 25-item pre-test and post-test assessing three aspects of meaning, which were translation, definition, and appropriateness. The treatment combined the Wordwall app with the K.I.M Vocabulary Technique. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test in IBM SPSS 25. The results showed a significant improvement in students‘ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. The pre-test mean score was 35.80, rising to 64.76 in the post-test, with a mean difference of -28.97. A paired sample t-test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05), indicating statistical significance. Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected, confirming that the use of the Wordwall application effectively enhanced students‘ vocabulary mastery.
