Abstract
Keywords: effectiveness, cartoon video, English vocabulary One of the media used in learning English vocabulary is cartoon video. In learning vocabulary usually the students found the problem in mastering it. Cartoon video is one kind of audio visual media. This media can make the material more understandable and comprehensible since the combination of images and sounds. The use of appropriate media is needed to support the teaching and learning process in reaching instructional aims. The formulation of research problem isIs using cartoon video effective to teach English vocabulary at the second grade of SMP IslamGondang? The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is any effectiveness using cartoon video to teach vocabulary at the second grade of SMP IslamGondang. This study employed pre experimental design in the form of one group pre test-post test design with quantitative approach. The subjects of the research were the second grade of SMP Islam Gondang which consists of 7 students, and population study was employed in this research. The instrument used to collect the data was test, in the form of vocabulary test. The data analysis was using T test formula. The result of the research showed that the mean of students’ vocabulary achievement before they are taught by using cartoon video was 29,85. While the mean of the students’ vocabulary achievement after they are taught by using cartoon video was 39,28. The result of 6,04 after compared with 1,943 is greater than the (6,04> 1,943). It can be concluded that there is any significant differences between before teaching English vocabulary by using cartoon video and after teaching English vocabulary by using cartoon video, and it means that teaching English vocabulary by using cartoon video is effective. In other words, cartoon video can be used as alternative media to teach English vocabulary to the students at SMP level. Based on the result above, the teacher is suggested to teach by using cartoon video and it should be appropriate with the students’ level because it help the students more easy to understand the material and make the teaching learning process more fun.
