Abstract
ABSTRACT Aptasyakurahma, Hyacintha Rahadatul. NIM 126203212107. 2025. The Correlation Between Students’ Reading AU (Alternative Universe) on X (Twitter) and Their Vocabulary Mastery at the 4th Semester Students in English Education Department of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Luluk Anjarwati, M.Pd. Keywords: correlation, reading alternative universe, vocabulary mastery One of the interesting phenomena in application X is the emergence of the “Alternative Universe”. The role of X here is that apart from being an application or platform that is often used, X also has a role as a platform for its users to create fan fiction stories with a thread that many people usually refer to as Alternative Universe or AU. The Alternative Universe's popularity among EFL learners has influenced their vocabulary skills, activities such as reading, writing, engaging in online communities, understanding conversation culture, improving reading comprehension and interpersonal skills. Learning English Vocabulary on X was fun and stress-free, and they could enjoy further learning. They can access it quickly, and accessible to everyone. It can increase learning motivation and enable users to learn independently. The formulations of the problem in this research are: 1. “Is there any significant correlation between reading Alternative Universe (AU) on X and the Vocabulary Mastery of 4th semester students in the English Education Department of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung?” and 2. “How does Alternative Universe (AU) enhance students’ vocabulary mastery?”. Based on these questions, this research aims to investigate the potential correlation between reading AU on X and the vocabulary mastery of students in the 4th semester. The method of this research was quantitative method and correlation as a design. The data of the reading Alternative Universe (AU) was collected from distributing questionnaire and the data vocabulary mastery was obtained from the vocabulary test. To get the final data, the data scale from the questionnaire which was in ordinal form was changed to interval data using MSI, to adjust to the results of the vocabulary test data scale which was already in interval form. The sample of this research was 36 students from 5 classes. The result of the computation showed that at the level of significant α= 0.05 and the number of respondents is 36. The sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00, it is lower than 0.05. So, there is significance correlation and it means that H₀ (Null Hypothesis) is rejected and Ha (Alternative Hypothesis) accepted. Therefore, the correlation between students reading Alternative Universe (AU) on X (Twitter) and their vocabulary mastery at the 4th semester students in English Education Department of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung is positive.
