Abstract

The effectiveness of using Inside Outside Circle (IOC) technique towards students’ achievement on speaking of the eight grade students at MTs Sunan Kalijogo Rejosari Kalidawir. Sarjana Thesis. Keywords: Speaking achievement, Inside Outside Circle (IOC) technique In the preliminary study at MTs Sunan Kalijogo Rejosari, it was found that the students have not reached the target yet in oral communication ability as stated in the school based curriculum because they were passive and not motivated to speak up. Based on the result of reviewing some previous studies, one of the techniques that can be used to increase their motivation in speaking is Inside Outside Circle (IOC) technique. This technique is assumed can help the students to enhance their speaking ability because the role of this technique is to engage all of the students in the conversation activity with different partners. Thus, the researcher intended to prove the effectiveness of Inside Outside Circle (IOC) technique towards the students’ speaking achievement of the eight grades students at MTs Sunan Kalijogo Rejosari Kalidawir. This study used pre-experimental research design. Then, the population of this study was all of students of the eight grade at MTs Sunan Kalijogo Rejosari that consist of four classes (120 students) and the sample was VIII B class consisting of 28 students who were selected by means purposive sampling. Furthermore, the research instrument was speaking test and the data collected through pretest and posttest were analyzed by using Paired sample T-test SPSS 16.0 for windows. The result of this study shows two important points. Firstly, students’ means score of their speaking achievement before and after being taught by using IOC technique are 63.43 and 74.86. Thus, there is significant difference between the two mean score is 11.43. Secondly, the result of Sig. (2-tailed) value in Paired sample T-test is 0,000. Thus means that the probability is less than 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). Hence, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. This indicates that IOC technique is effective to enhance the students’ achievement in speaking. Pedagogically, IOC technique can be implemented in teaching speaking for the eight grade students at MTs Sunan Kalijogo Rejosari and the other students sharing common characteristics with the subjects of this study. This study used one group pre-test and post-test so that there is no other group to control the effects of other variables irrelevant. Therefore, the future researchers are suggested to conduct the same study by using true-experimental in order to be able to minimize the effects of other variables irrelevant.
