Keywords: non-observance maxims, cooperative principle, hidden meaning, illocutionary act, movie. People sometimes may not explicitly convey their intention to other people in some situations, and for some reasons. This situation, based on Grice can be categorized as non-observance maxims since they do not fulfill the maxims of Cooperative Principle. This phenomenon is easily found in daily communication, including movie, just like Pitch Perfect 2. Personnel of the Barden Bellas in this movie were often fail to observe the maxims of Cooperative Principle, thus, this study is aimed to: 1) identify the types of non-observance maxims of Cooperative Principle which are performed by the Barden Bellas in Pitch Perfect 2 movie, 2) identify the hidden meaning of non-observance maxims of Cooperative Principle performed by the Barden Bellas in Pitch Perfect 2 movie. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were analyzed descriptively based on related theory of Cooperative Principle by Grice and Illocutionary Act by Searle. Moreover, the data were collected from the utterances performed by the Barden Bellas which failed to observe the maxims of Cooperative Principle. They were taken from the transcript of Pitch Perfect 2 movie. The result of this study reveals that the type of non-observance maxims which is the most frequently used is flouting maxim, then opting out maxims, and violating maxims in that order. Personnel of the Barden Bellas deliberately fail to observe the maxims in order to create humor since it belongs to musical comedy film and to show intimacy among them since they have a close relationship for almost 4 years. Furthermore, according to the theory of Illocutionary Act by Searle, it showed that the hidden meaning of utterances which fail to fulfill the maxims of Cooperative Principle by the Barden Bellas were classified into assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives. In conclusion, the use of non-observance maxims may indicate the characteristics of person such as found in this study that every person has their own way in delivering what in their minds are. Besides, it also increase the language varieties applied by the people in their daily life. Moreover, when they fail to fulfil the maxims of cooperative principle, it does not mean that they are not cooperative. In other words, it can be said that what is meant is beyond what is said. Furthermore, from the speech act point of view, it shows that flouting maxims hold the highest degree of non-observance maxims of cooperative principle since most of the forms of utterance have different functions. From this study, it is hoped that teacher or lecturer can use a movie as a media in teaching cooperative principle or speech act. Besides, for those who are interested in studying Pragmatics, they can use the theory of Politeness Principle to analyze this movie in order to gain the deeper understanding of why people fail to fulfill the maxims of cooperative principle.
