Abstract

Listening is an important skill to learn in learning English. In this modern era, a lot of information contained in electronic media is presented using English. In English language learning, listening is a fundamental component that often receives less attention. For students who are still low in English, listening is the most difficult thing for students when learning. When learning in class, students listen more than they speak. In developing listening ability in English, many students experience difficulties. Therefore, teachers need interesting media in the teaching and learning process to attract student’s attention. Teachers can use audiovisual media when teaching English so that students are not bored in class and enjoy learning English. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Sanankulon. This study investigates whether there is a significant difference in student’s listening ability scores before and after being taught by using short cartoon videos. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using short cartoon videos on the listening ability of seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Sanankulon. The research method used was pre-experiment research using one group with a quantitative approach. The population of this study were seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sanankulon with a sample size of 32 students in class VII C SMPN 1 Sanankulon Data collection techniques used pre-test and post-test. The data analysis method uses Paired Sample T-test analysis using IBM SPSS version 25 for Windows. The final results show that the Sig (2-tailed) value is 0.000 (p < 0.05), which means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, there is a significant difference between student’s listening ability before and after being treated with short cartoon videos. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of short cartoon videos is effective in improving student’s listening ability. This study recommends the use of audiovisual media, especially short cartoon videos, as an interesting and effective alternative in learning English at the junior high school level.
