Abstract
Maulana, M. Z. H. I, NIM 12203193092. 2025. The Correlation between the Frequency of Listening English Audio Medias and Grammar Proficiency of English Department Students in UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: Listening frequency, grammar proficiency, English audio media, TOEP, English language learning Grammar proficiency is a crucial component of English language mastery, yet traditional learning often relies on textbooks and written exercises. In today’s digital era, students are increasingly exposed to English audio content such as podcasts, audiobooks, and songs. This shift presents an opportunity to explore whether frequent listening to English audio media can support grammar acquisition more effectively than conventional methods. The research problem addressed in this thesis is: (1) is there a correlation between the frequency of listening to English audio media and grammar proficiency among English Department students at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung? The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between students’ listening frequency and their grammar proficiency scores. The research targets sixth-semester students of the English Education Department as participants. This study uses a quantitative correlational research design involving 56 randomly selected students. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure listening frequency and TOEP (Test of English Proficiency) scores to assess grammar proficiency. The data analysis used Spearman’s rank-order correlation due to the ordinal nature of the listening data. The instruments used include the questionnaire and official grammar proficiency results from the university’s Language Development Center. The results of this study show a statistically significant moderate positive correlation between the frequency of listening to English audio media and grammar proficiency (ρ = 0.596, p = 0.000). This finding indicates that students who frequently listen to English audio tend to have higher grammar scores. The study concludes that integrating English audio media into daily learning activities can be an effective supplementary strategy to improve students' grammar proficiency.
