Abstract

English is a skill that must be mastered by everyone, especially English students, the use of social media is widespread among students. Social media is not only used for entertainment, but can also be used as a resource for learning English. Social media provides various content that can be used to support English learning. Therefore, social media is one of the factors that influences English learning. Social media can help students increase motivation and develop skills in English. This research question is how the students’ perception about the influence of social media toward English learning motivation of English education department students. This research aims to determine the perceptions of English Education students regarding to the influence of social media on English learning at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This research uses quantitative methods with a survey research design. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Samples were taken from 50 respondent of sixth semester English Education students using purposive sampling techniques. The data in this research was analyzed using descriptive statistic using SPSS 27 and Margin of Error to calculate the proportion. The research results showed that 98% of students stated that social media had an influence on English learning. At the level of significance 5% or α 0.05, students who feel that social media has an influence on English learning are around 97.5% - 98.5%. Meanwhile, 2% of students stated that social media had not influenced on learning English. At the level of significance 5% or α 0.05, students who feel that social media has no influence on English learning are around 1.5% - 2.5%.
