Abstract

This Study was motivated by the importance of listening skills in English language learning, which is often overlooked in many educational institutions. Authentic materials are believed to enhance students’ listening skills as they reflect real-life situations as spoken by native speakers. Their use is expected to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-life communication contexts. The research problems investigated in this study are: (1) how do listening lecturer use authentic materials in teaching listening at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, (2) what are the advantages of learning authentic materials in teaching listening at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, (3) what are the challenges of learning authentic materials in teaching listening at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The purposes of the study are: (1) to investigate how listening lecturer at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung use authentic materials in teaching listening, (2) to identify the advantages of using authentic materials in teaching listening as perceived in the context of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, (3) to explore the challenges faced in using authentic materials in teaching listening at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This study uses a qualitative research design with a case study approach. The research participants included one lecturer of the Critical Listening Comprehension course and 4th semester students. Data were collected through classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The main research instrument was the researcher, supported by observation guidelines, interview guides, and course documents. Thematic analysis was used to process the data. The results of the study indicate that authentic materials are routinely used in listening lessons. Students demonstrate higher motivation, improved vocabulary mastery, and better understanding of native speakers’ speech. However, challenges such as the suitability of materials for students’ proficiency levels, unfamiliar accents, time constraints, and limited teacher preparation were also identified. This study recommends teacher training and careful material selection for more effective implementation.
