Abstract

Media use in teaching reading comprehension at the junior high school level plays an important role in creating an enjoyable and engaging learning environment. Augmented Reality (AR), which integrates digital content with the real world, provides an innovative and interactive learning experience. This research aimed to investigate whether AR could be effectively used to improve students' reading comprehension. This research focused on supporting students’ understanding of recount texts. To achieve this purpose, the research problem formulated was: “Is there any significant difference in students' reading comprehension scores of recount text who were taught with and without using Augmented Reality (AR) Technology at SMPN 1 Ngunut.” This research used a quasi-experimental design with a quantitative approach, which included experimental and control groups. The population was all eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Ngunut, consisting of 394 students. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, with two classes chosen: VIII-D (35 students) as the experimental group and VIII-C (36 students) as the control group. Only 30 students from each class were included in the data analysis. The experimental group was taught using Augmented Reality (AR) technology, while the control group was taught without AR through conventional methods. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test in the form of pre-test and post-test with 25 multiple-choice questions. The data were analyzed using an independent sample t-test in SPSS 27. The results showed that students taught using Augmented Reality (AR) technology had significantly higher reading comprehension scores on recount text than the control group. The mean post-test score of the experimental group was 75.2, while the control group scored 64.8. The data analysis revealed a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05. This indicates that Augmented Reality (AR) technology is an effective medium for improving students' reading comprehension, especially in understanding recount texts.
