Abstract
This research is based on the lack of speaking ability in students, speaking ability is one of the important elements in English. Speaking ability is a very important, to understand others and express it through speaking, but also to exchange ideas. However, many factors cause the lack of speaking skills in students, such as the lack of speaking practice, lack of vocabulary, and lack of fluency in pronouncing a sentence. The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of the Tongue Twister method can improve students' speaking skills. Tongue Twister is used in this study as a method to improve students' speaking skill abilities. The population in this study was class VIII J SMPN 1 Srengat Blitar which consisted of 32 students. This research uses Classroom Action (CAR), researchers use the CAR model from Kemmis and McTaggart, each cycle consists of four phases; Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. To support this research, quantitative methods such as tests were used in this study. Data collection in this study used Preliminary Test, and Post Test in each Cycle. Data in the form of students' speaking scores were processed into one as a description and analyzed to determine the final results of the use this method. After applying and taking action using the tongue twister method, the average results of student scores increase. Which, the first scores taken from the Preliminary-test resulted in an average of 12.5% students successfully reach the target number of KKM which is 75, which means 4 students have successfully achieved it. Then this average increased rapidly after the action in cycle 1, as evidenced by the results of student achievement in this cycle which increased quite well compared to before. That is 46.87% of students have successfully reached the KKM score, this scores increased 34.37% and increased by 11 students who were able to reach the target. This significant increase is a positive trend for the next cycle of action, which in cycle 2 with an average of 78.12% with a total success of 25 students out of a total of 32 students. In cycle 2, the increase was quite rapid, so that the average student could reach the KKM target. The results of the speaking test showed an increase in students' pronunciation and speaking ability. So that these results have met the success criteria in this study and are declared successful in improving students' speaking skills using this method.
