Keywords: Effectiveness, Media of Picture, Descriptive text writing skill Writing is one of the language skills which is hard for the students to do, because this activity expects them to create written product in which they demonstrate certain ideas structurally which involve the correct grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and paragraph development. In competence based curriculum, students are demanded to produce written texts based on certain genres. One of the genres they should create is a descriptive text. Unfortunately, sometimes students get stuck in describing something. Because of these difficulties, an efforts must be done to solve the problem. One solution is teach by using media of picture. The teacher used picture to motivate students to write in teaching and learning process. So, the students can express their thought, feelings, or ideas. The objectives of this study are : 1) To know the students’ skill in writing descriptive text before being taught by using media of picture. 2) To know the students’ skill in writing descriptive text after being taught by using media of picture. 3) To know whether there is a significant difference between students’ skill in writing descriptive text before and after being taught by using media of picture. This study used quantitative approach with pre-experimental design. The population of the research is all the students eight grade at SMPN 3 Kedungwaru consisting of 315 students. The sample of this research is class of VIII A, consistsing of 35 students that are selected by means of non probability sampling. Meanwhile, the instrument is test which is used to conduct pre-test and post-test. The data collected through pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using Paired Samples T-test with SPSS Windows 16.0. The result of the study showed that the mean score of pre-test was 63.57 and the mean score of post-test was 77.77, which higher than the mean score of pre-test. From the result of paired sample test, the signifcant value was 0.00 lower than 0.05. It means the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, which means that between pretest and post-test there is significant difference. The result of tcount (9.950) was bigger than ttable (2.032). In the other words, the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that there is significant difference in the students’ writing descriptive text of before and after being taught by using picture. Therefore, teaching descriptive text on writing skill by using picture is effective to improve students’ writing skill in descriptive text.
