Keywords: Effectiveness, Collaborative Writing Method, Writing Skill Writing is a skill which is used to communicate indirectly, without face to face interaction. It is also nonverbal communication. In composing writing, the students are required to demonstrate the control of a number of writing aspects; they are control of content, format, sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation spelling, etc. The goal of National Curriculum is to make students write written texts (narrative, procedure, recount, descriptive, etc.) in order to increase their productivity and quality writing product rapidly. Writing is the most difficult skill among the other skills. Firstly, because writing requires good grammar include the many grammatical structures, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and rules that are incorporated in English. Secondly, people are often known to spend less time to write than to listen, to speak and even to read. Thirdly, when students of English as a foreign language write something, they have a big question in mind whether what they write is correct or incorrect. Because of those reasons, teacher should have an alternative method to solve the problems. One solution is teacher should apply Collaborative Writing Method. The teacher apply Collaborative Writing Method to helps them to do their work information, a higher order thinking skill which includes analyzing information and identifying key concepts. The objectives of this study are : 1) To know the students’ writing score before being taught by using collaborative writing method. 2) To know the students’ writing score after being taught by using collaborative writing method. 3) To know if there is any significant differences score between students who are taught with using collaborative writing method and students who are taught without using collaborative writing method. Research method:1) the research design in this research is quasi-experimental with nonrandomized control group pretest-posttest design 2) the population of this research were all students of eight grade students in SMPN 3 Kedungwaru (315 students), 3) the sample was VIII B class consisting of 30 students as the experimental group and VIII C class consisting of 30 students as the control group, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using Independent sample T test of SPSS 16.0 The result showed , the significance value 0.02 which lower than the significance level 0.05. In the pretest of control group, the average score is 62.71, and the average score in posttest is 69.87 While the pretest of experimental group is 59.43 and the average score of posttest is 75.37. The mean score of both groups shows difference value, the result shows that the posttest of experimental group was higher than that of control group. It means that there is significance different between students’ writing skill who are taught through collaborative writing method and students who are taught without collaborative writing method. Therefore, the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means that there is a significant difference of students’ writing score between students who are taught with using collaborative writing method and students who are taught without using collaborative writing method. Therefore, Collaborative Writing Method is an effective method and it could be used as an alternative method for teaching writing.
