Abstract

Mufidah, Muna. Student Registered Number. 126203202129. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Authentic Materials on Vocabulary Mastery for Third Grade Students’ at SDN 2 Krosok Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. Department of English Education. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M. Pd. Keywords: Authentic Materials, Vocabulary Mastery, Elementary School Students. Vocabulary mastery is a crucial component of English language learning, especially in the early stages. However, third-grade students at SDN 2 Krosok Tulungagung demonstrate limited vocabulary mastery due to conventional learning methods that rely solely on textbooks, often leading to boredom and a lack of student engagement. Data shows that English proficiency in Indonesia remains low, with only around 34% of elementary school students able to recognize 50 basic English words. This highlights the urgent need for improved vocabulary mastery at the elementary level. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using authentic materials, particularly visual media in the form of posters, to enhance the vocabulary mastery of third-grade students at SDN 2 Krosok Tulungagung. The primary objective is to determine whether there is a significant difference in students’ vocabulary knowledge before and after being taught using authentic materials. This study applied a quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental design, specifically a one-group pre-test and post-test model. A total of 23 third-grade students were selected as participants using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the intervention. During the treatment phase, students were exposed to various authentic materials drawn from real-life contexts, primarily posters, integrated into classroom instruction over several sessions. Statistical analysis was performed using paired sample t-tests with SPSS 22.0. The results revealed a substantial improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery. The mean score increased from 61.04 in the pre-test to 84.69 in the post-test, indicating clear progress. A significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) confirmed that the difference in scores was statistically significant, supporting the hypothesis that authentic materials effectively enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. The use of visually appealing and contextually relevant media, such as posters, enabled students to associate words with real-life meanings, making the learning process more engaging and interactive. Therefore, it can be concluded that authentic materials are effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of third-grade students at SDN 2 Krosok Tulungagung.
