Abstract

Reading ability is one of the important aspects in mastering English which plays a major role in supporting students' learning process. Reading is not just about recognizing letters and words, but also includes understanding, analyzing, and the ability to draw conclusions from written texts. However, many students still have difficulty in understanding English texts, especially in finding main ideas, understanding implied meanings, and answering reading questions correctly. This difficulty is caused by low interest in reading, limited vocabulary, and learning methods that are less varied and do not actively involve students in the reading process. To overcome this problem, the researcher applied the SQ3R method—an active and structured reading strategy consisting of five steps: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. This method aims to improve students' understanding and memory of the information read through active involvement at each stage of reading. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving two eighth grade classes at MTs Darussalam Rejotangan. The experimental class was given treatment using the storybook-based SQ3R method, while the control class was taught using conventional methods. The instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test to measure students' reading ability before and after treatment. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test through SPSS version 22. The results of the analysis showed a significant increase in the experimental class, with the average score increasing from 49.55 in the pre-test to 69.55 in the post-test. Meanwhile, the control class only experienced an increase from 43.00 to 63.25. The significance value (Sig. 2- tailed) of 0.000 <0.05 indicates a significant difference between the two groups. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the application of the storybook-based SQ3R method is effective in improving students' reading skills. This improvement can be seen from a better understanding of the reading content, the ability to draw conclusions, and the increasing active involvement of students in the learning process. This method not only has a positive cognitive impact, but also creates a more interesting and student-centered learning experience. Therefore, this method is recommended to be applied more widely in English learning.
