Abstract

The Thesis entitled “The effectiveness of Memory Matching Flashcard Game on Vocabulary Mastery of Seventh Grade Students at MTs PSM Tanen” was written by Izza Malihatin Najah, NIM 126203213`94, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Supervised by Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Memory Matching Flashcard Games, Vocabulary Mastery Vocabulary mastery is one of the most critical aspects of learning English, as it forms the foundation for developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. However, many students still face difficulties in remembering and using new vocabulary due to conventional teaching methods that rely heavily on rote memorization and lack engaging activities. This condition may lead to low motivation and poor retention of new words. To address this issue, an interactive media that may support vocabulary learning is the use of Memory Matching Flashcard Game, which aims to help students learn vocabulary in a more meaningful, fun, and engaging way. The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of Memory Matching Flashcard Game in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The research employed a pre-experimental design with a quantitative approach. The population consisted of seventh-grade students at MTs PSM Tanen, with class VII B as the sample, totaling 28 students. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test vocabulary tests and analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The result showed that the average pre-test score of students was 58.57, while the average post-test score increased to 80.54. The paired sample t-test analysis indicated a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery after the intervention. This result suggests that incorporating Memory Matching Flashcard Game into vocabulary instruction provides an interactive and enjoyable learning experience that enhances vocabulary retention and mastery among junior high school students, and can serve as a valuable tool for teachers to improve vocabulary learning outcomes in the classroom.
