The Effectiveness of Teaching Using Comic Strip on Writing Achievement of Grade VII Students of Al Azhaar Islamic Junior High School. Thesis English Education Program. Faculty of Islamic Education State Islamic Institute (IAIN). Advisor. Nursamsu, M.Pd Keywords: effectiveness, writing achievement, comic strip. The main purpose of writing itself is to make the writer creates or expresses ideas into a written form on paper to give information to the reader. It is similar with the purpose of communication. In writing, when the reader can understand the meaning that consists of the words and sentences, it means that communication has occurred and got success. Therefore, writing is also called as a written communication. Meanwhile, for junior high school students, writing is not only an important written communication, but also an important language skill that must be learnt in the school. However, writing is not an easy matter for young learners, including junior high school students. They are usually nervous and panic when they are asked by the teacher to write some paragraphs in English. Most of them have limited vocabularies, especially new vocabularies, diction, and idiom. Then, they fear to write it, because doubtful with the punctuation. In addition, they also have difficulties in grammar. They are still confused how to write sentences grammatically. Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in finding the effect of using comic strips in teaching writing to the first grade at Al Azhaar Islamic Junior High School 2016/2017. The formulation of the research problem: Is there any significant difference between students who are taught writing before using comic strips and students who are taught writing after using comic strips? The purpose of the study is intended to know the effectiveness of using comic strip in teaching writing the first grade students of Al Azhaar Islamic Junior High School. The objectives of research can be stated to know the effectiveness of using comic strip on the students’ writing achievement. Research method: 1) the research design in this study was pre-experimental one group pretest post test, 2) the population of the study was all students of first grade at Al Azhaar Islamic Junior High School, 3) the sample was VII E class consist of 25 students, 4) the research instrument was a test, 5) the data analysis was using T test. The result showed that the student’s mean score in writing before treatment was 19,92 from the total score 25. While the students’ score after treatment was 23,24. With the numeral of significant 0.00, it means that smaller from 0.05, then the hypothesis null clarify that there is significance different score using by comic strip on student’s writing achievement at the first grade of Al Azhaar Islamic Junior High School is accepted. Because the tcount is bigger that Significance level, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that there is a significant different writing score of the first grade at Al Azhaar Islamic Junior High School between before and after taught by using comic strip. The conclusion is that using comic in teaching writing is effective.
