Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the fundamental competencies in learning Arabic. Its importance is not limited to daily communication but also extends to academic contexts such as discussions, presentations, and scientific debates. However, many students of the Arabic Language Education Department at Hasyim Asy’ari University, Jombang, face various challenges in developing their speaking skills, including limited vocabulary, grammatical errors, lack of confidence, and insufficient practice in expressing arguments logically. This study aims to describe the implementation of scientific debate as a learning method in teaching speaking skills, identify the problems encountered by students, and explore effective strategies to improve their speaking competence. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the application of scientific debate significantly contributes to the improvement of students’ speaking skills, particularly in terms of fluency, accuracy, vocabulary development, and self-confidence. In addition, students demonstrated better abilities in constructing logical arguments and responding critically to opposing views. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, such as limited vocabulary mastery, anxiety during speaking activities, lack of practice outside the classroom, and difficulties in formulating arguments spontaneously. To address these issues, strategies such as providing thematic vocabulary lists, conducting repeated debate practices, and offering constructive feedback proved to be effective. The study concludes that integrating scientific debate into the Arabic language learning curriculum can enhance students’ linguistic, cognitive, and affective aspects. Therefore, it is recommended that this method be implemented consistently and supported by well-structured teaching materials, as well as expanded to other educational institutions.
