Abstract
ABSTRACT Mumtaza, Novia Husna. 2026. The Correlation Between Students' Reading Habit and Their Vocabulary Mastery Among the Eleventh Grade Students at MAN 1 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Susanto, S.S, M.Pd. Keywords: reading habit, vocabulary mastery, correlation, EFL, textbook. Reading habit is an essential factor in supporting vocabulary development in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Nevertheless, a number of Madrasah Aliyah students still experience limited vocabulary mastery, which may be influenced by low engagement in reading English textbooks. This study investigated the relationship between students’ reading habit and their vocabulary mastery among eleventh-grade students of MAN 1 Tulungagung. A quantitative correlational design was applied in this study. The participants were 30 eleventh-grade students that were selected through purposive sampling based on their high levels of reading habit. The data were obtained through 20 items reading habit questionnaire and 20 items multiple-choice vocabulary test. The questionnaire was used to measure reading frequency, duration, interest, and motivation, while the vocabulary test was focused on students’ receptive vocabulary knowledge. The data analysis employed descriptive statistics and Pearson’s Product–Moment correlation. The results indicated that the students demonstrated high levels of reading habit (M = 74.60, SD = 4.952) and vocabulary mastery (M = 86.50, SD = 11.458). The correlation analysis revealed a moderate, positive, and statistically showed significant relationship between reading habit and vocabulary mastery (r = 0.497, p = 0.005).The finding implied that stronger reading habit was associated with better vocabulary mastery. In conclusion, reading habit is contributive to achieve the standart of vocabulary mastery. To elevate the students’ vocabulary mastery, english teachers are encouraged not only to promote regular reading activities using textbooks, but also suggest the students to maintain consistent reading comprehension by memorizing the different words used in the text to improve their vocabulary knowledge.
