Abstract

Nurlaila, Richa. Student Registered Number. 12510194021. 2022. Teachers’ Strategies In Improving Students’ Critical Thinking Skills During Online Learning. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. Islamic State University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The 1st Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd and the 2nd Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Teachers’ strategy, Critical Thinking, Online Learning The Covid-19 pandemic changed the learning system, which was initially carried out face-to-face in schools, replaced with online learning. Therefore, the teacher must prepare a strategy used during learning to help students increase their knowledge and improve their critical thinking skills, even though it is done online. The learning strategy is one way that the teacher must consider in teaching. Through this study, the researcher discussed the strategies used by English teachers at SMAN 1 Tanjunganom in improving students' critical thinking skills during online learning. The objectives of this research were (1) To elaborate the teachers’ strategy in improving students' critical thinking skills during online learning at SMAN 1 Tanjunganom. (2) To elaborate on the teachers' reasons for using the strategies to improve students’ critical thinking skills during online learning at SMAN 1 Tanjunganom. The research design of this study was qualitative research. The data collection techniques were observation and interviews to dig out for more profound information about teachers' strategies to improve students' critical thinking skills and the reasons teachers use these strategies. The research shows that four strategies were used to improve students' critical thinking skills. These strategies are Questioning Techniques, Online Discussions, Collaborative Learning, and Problem Based Learning. With some of the strategies mentioned, the teacher can choose a strategy appropriate to the class condition since each class has different abilities to improve students' critical thinking skills. Based on the teachers' reason for using the strategies, makes the students more active, have the courage to speak, and grow confident. The next reason that can make students solve problems, students have a lot of knowledge and involve students in the learning process, and actively participate. Since during online learning, the class would be passive if the teacher could not choose an appropriate strategy for the class conditions during learning. Good creativity would support the active learning process. Since the learning process involving students could lead to liveliness, the learning process would create a conducive situation to stimulate students' critical thinking. Teachers' responses indicated that all strategies could improve students' critical thinking skills.
