Abstract

Thesis entitled “An Analysis of Code-Switching Found in Agatha Chelsea’s Podcast” is written by Alifirah Melia Vernanda, Student ID Number. 1860203222136, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University (UIN) Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, and is supervised by Jusuf Bachtiar, S.S, M.Pd. Keyword: Bilingual, Communication, Code-Switching, Sociolinguistics, Podcast This research is based on the code-switching phenomenon, which commonly occurs in multilingual societies. Code-switching is the switching from one language to another within the same conversation. In sociolinguistics, code-switching has become an important topic of research, as it illustrates how language is used in social life. In today’s digital age, the code-switching phenomenon can be found both in face-to-face interactions and in digital media such as podcasts. Podcasts are a type of audio-based digital media offering casual and interactive conversations, allowing speakers to switch languages. This makes podcasts an interesting digital platform for analyzing the use of code-switching in the digital communication context. The research aims to analyze the types and functions of code-switching that appear in two episodes of Agatha Chelsea’s podcast, as well as to analyze which types and functions are most dominant used by speakers in Agatha Chelsea’s podcast. This research applies a qualitative approach using a text analysis and descriptive quantitative based on Poplack’s (1980) theory and Gumperz’s (1982) theory. The result of this research shows that there are 3 types of code-switching in two episodes of Agatha Chelsea’s podcast, namely tag-switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. The most dominant type of code switching is intra-sentential switching. Furthermore, there are 6 functions of code-switching namely quotation, addresse specification, interjections, reiteration, message qualification, and personalization versus objectivization. The most dominant function of code switching is message qualification. These findings contribute to a broader understanding of code-switching in the digital media context, particularly podcasts.
