Abstract
Motivational orientation refers to the direction of students' motivation in learning, which is generally classified into intrinsic and extrinsic motivational orientations. In language learning, particularly in learning English, students may be motivated by their own interest and enjoyment or by external factors such as rewards, recognition, and external demands. Motivational orientation plays an important role in students' success in learning English. One possible factor that may influence students' motivational orientation is their personality type. However, previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between students' personality types and their motivational orientations in learning English. The formulation of the problem in this research is: “Is there a correlation between students’ personality types and their motivational orientations in learning English at MAN 1 Tulungagung?”.This study aims to determine the correlation between students’ personality types and their motivational orientation in learning English at MAN 1 Tulungagung. The method used in this research is a quantitative correlational design. The main sample of this study consisted of 132 tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Tulungagung, along with 33 students as respondents for the instrument try-out. The sampling technique used in this study was random sampling. The data were collected through questionnaires adapted from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) to measure personality types and the Language Learning Orientation Scale (LLOS) to measure motivational orientation based on Self- Determination Theory. Since the data obtained were ordinal, the data analysis technique employed was the Spearman rank correlation test as a non-parametric statistical method. The results of the data analysis using the Spearman Rank Correlation showed a correlation coefficient of r = -0.099 with a significance value of 0.282. Since the significance value was greater than 0.05, the findings indicate a weak negative correlation between students' personality types and their motivational orientations in learning English. These findings suggest that neither extrovert nor introvert personality types can directly determine students' tendency to possess a particular motivational orientation, whether intrinsic or extrinsic. Instead, students' motivational orientations may be influenced by various other factors, such as the learning environment, teaching methods, social interactions, and students' personal goalsfactors, including the learning environment, teaching methods, social interaction, and students’ personal goals.
