Abstract

Learning terms of address is important for English learner, but learning it through society will be difficult. According to the fact, the use of media such as novel is needed to facilitate the learning process. The aims of this study are to reveal the used of terms of address in the Of Mice and Men novel which written by John Steinbeck. Focus on what of types of terms of are used in the “Of Mice and Men” novel, how do the terms of address reflect social factors in the “Of Mice and Men” novel, and what function do the terms of address serve in the “Of Mice and Men” novel. To answer the research question, the research used qualitative content analysis through documents, while the researcher becomes the instrument of the research. The media used was a novel written by John Steinbeck "Of Mice and Men" Penguin books Edition which carried about friendship theme. The data taken from the dialogue which consisted terms of address utterance by all characters. The result show that there are several types of addressing terms, namely: First Name, Title, Last Name, Pet Name, Kinship Terms, and Mockery. This type appears due to several factors, namely: Social Status, Gender, Age, Family Relationship, Occupation Hierarchy, Race, and Degree of Intimacy. The emergence of certain types of addressing terms with certain factors also has a function, in this research three functions were found, namely: Show Intimacy, Show Power, and Show Respect. The fact showed that First Name is often expressed by the characters because of the Degree of Intimacy factor to show an intimacy between the characters. It could be concluded that in Of Mice and Men novel, First Name become the most expressed terms used by each character to show intimacy cause by Degree of Intimacy. The short timeframe for the research made the researcher aware of many imperfections. It is recommended to conduct other research in more than one novel with different backgrounds. It is also recommended to conduct other research on the novel with the same background but by different authors.
