Abstract
Kurniawati, Indri Dwi. NIM 126203211036. 2025. This study was inspired by students' low comprehension in reading, limited vocabulary, and low participation in English learning at MTs Assyafi'iyah Gondang Tulungagung. Students tend to be passive, lack confidence, and get bored easily because the learning methods are still teacher-centered. Therefore, innovative learning media are needed to increase student motivation and engagement, one of which is through the application of Duolingo for Schools as a technology-based and gamified learning media. This classroom action research aimed to improve students’ vocabulary, reading skills, and classroom participation through the use of Duolingo for Schools in English learning for seventh-grade students at MTs Assyafi’iyah Gondang Tulungagung. The study was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through tests, observation sheets, field notes, and documentation. The findings revealed a consistent improvement in students’ learning outcomes and participation. Students’ learning scores increased from a pre-test average of 58.13 to 74.80 in Post-Test 1 and further to 87.47 in Post-Test 2. Similarly, students’ participation improved significantly, with average participation increasing from 41.33% in Cycle 1 Meeting 1 to 86.67% in Cycle 2 Meeting 2. The use of Duolingo for Schools, supported by gamification features such as XP points, leaderboards, structured tasks, and teacher monitoring dashboards, successfully increased students’ engagement, motivation, and consistency in completing vocabulary and reading exercises. The results indicate that Duolingo for Schools is an effective digital tool for enhancing students’ Reading comprehension, increasing vocabulary mastery, and promoting active participation in Learning activities in English Classes. Therefore, integrating Duolingo for Schools with guided instructional practices can serve as an innovative and effective approach to improving English learning at the junior high school level.
