State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono.M.Pd. Keyword: Pragmatics, speech act, directive act, directive strategy Peoples always communicate one another by using language in their social environment. While people communicate, they use utterance to express what they have in their mind. The utterance is not only to explain but also to show speaker meaning based on the proper context. The utterances a speaker performing not only contain a grammar but also action in utterance. The study of what speaker saying is called pragmatics. As deals with communicative purpose, to express what speaker said, the speaker is producing directive acts. Directive acts is the utterance intended the hearer to do something as speaker want. In here, the utterance said by speaker influence the hearer to do something. The way to prove the speaker ability in applying language in context is called directive strategy. The researcher intended to study how directive act and directive strategy used by native speakers. Thus, this study may contribute authentic materials for speaking class. The research problems were: 1) What types of directive acts are found performed by characters in the Angry Bird movie? 2) What strategies are used to convey directive acts performed by characters in the Angry Bird movie? 3) How are the frequency of each types of directive act and strategy performed by characters in the Angry Bird movie? The research design of this study is descriptive quantitative survey. It is to investigate three research problems in relation to directive act, directive strategy and the frequency of each type. The population of this study is all utterances in the movie containing directive acts performed by characters in the Angry Bird movie. The sampling technique used to collect the sample is purposive sampling. The instrument used document. The researcher used Searle’s theories of directive acts and Blum Kulka’s theories of directive strategy in analyzing the data. This study found : (1) 44 utterances containing requesting acts, 13 utterances containing forbidding acts, 188 utterances containing asking acts, 87 utterances containing ordering acts, 93 utterances containing commanding acts, 12 utterances containing suggesting acts, 4 utterances containing advising acts. (2) Directive strategy performed by speakers are 175 utterances containing mood derivable, 7 containing explicit performative, 6 containing hedge performative, 5containing obligation statements, 7 containing want statement, 7containing suggestory formulae, 8 containing query prepatory, 6 containing strong hint, 6containing mild hint. 3) the frequency of each types of directive acts performed by the speakers are, 9.98% for requesting acts, 2.95% forbidding acts, 42.63% asking acts, 19.73% ordering acts, 21.09% commanding acts, 2.72% suggesting acts, 0.91% advising act. And, the frequency of each types of directive strategy performed by speakers are 77.1% for mood variable, 3.1% for explicit performatives, 2.6% for hedge performatives, 2.2% for obligation statement, 3.1% for want statements, 3.1% for suggestory formulae,3.5% for query preparatory, 2.6% for strong hints, 2.6% mild hint. Based on the results of study, the writer wants to give suggestions for the next research. The data of this research are limited, only focusing on directive. To the next research is expected to study on another focus of speech acts such expressive, commisive, performative, etc. So, that the descriptions of speech acts used by the native speakers in the movies will be well-described.
