Abstract
The thesis entitled "Teacher Strategies in Teaching Speaking at SMK Sore Tulungagung” was written by Deni Erwanto, NIM 126203212134, English Education Program Study, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, advisor : Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I, M.Pd. Keyword: Speaking, Qualitative Research, Strategy, Teaching speaking. This study investigates teacher strategies in teaching speaking at SMK Sore Tulungagung. Speaking is an essential skill in English learning because it enables students to communicate ideas and express thoughts effectively. However, many students face difficulties in speaking, such as limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and insufficient opportunities to practice. Therefore, this research focuses on identifying the strategies used by teachers in teaching speaking and understanding how these strategies influence students’ speaking development. This research employed a qualitative approach to explore teacher strategies in teaching speaking. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with the English teacher and students, and documentation. The qualitative method was used to obtain in-depth information about the implementation of teacher strategies in the teaching and learning process. The findings reveal that teachers applied various strategies in teaching speaking, including small group discussion, presentation, question and answer, reading strategies, and story telling. These strategies encouraged students to actively participate in speaking activities and created an interactive learning atmosphere. The results also indicate that the strategies helped improve students’ speaking skills, motivation, and confidence in using English. In conclusion, teacher strategy plays a significant role in teaching speaking at SMK Sore Tulungagung. The use of varied and interactive strategies can enhance the effectiveness of speaking instruction and support students’ speaking development. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers implement appropriate strategies in teaching speaking, and future researchers conduct further qualitative studies on teacher strategies in different educational contexts.
