Abstract
Moral reason plays an important role in shaping individual’s behavior, especially in understanding how people make decisions in social situations. In movie, characters often reflect various levels and stages of moral reasons that can be analyzed to gain deeper insights into human values. Lilo & Stitch 2025 movie presents a range of conflicts and characters’ interactions that contain particular moral decision. The research questions of this study are: (1) what levels and stages of moral reasons deployed by the main characters in the movie, (2) how did the main characters deploy their moral reasons in the movie, (3) why did the main characters deploy their moral reasons in the movie. In line with these questions, the objectives of this study are to identify the levels and stages of moral reasons deployed by the main characters in the movie, to explain how the main characters deployed their moral reasons in the movie, to explain why the main characters deployed their moral reasons in the movie. This study used qualitative research design with descriptive approach. The data were collected from the main characters’ dialogues and actions named Lilo, Stitch, and Nani in Lilo & Stitch 2025 movie. The researcher identified, categorized, and analyzed 112 data based on moral development theory by Lawrence Kohlberg. The data were then interpreted to understand the patterns of moral reasons, how they were expressed, and why they were expressed. The results showed that the three main characters demonstrated dynamic movement across different levels and stages of moral reasons. Lilo dominantly at conventional level but sometimes shifted to pre-conventional and post-conventional levels depending on the situation. Stitch mainly began at pre-conventional level and developed toward higher levels through social interaction and emotional attachment. Nani consistently dominant at conventional level, especially in terms of responsibility and rules, but sometimes she shifted to post-conventional level depending on the situations. In conclusion, moral reasons in the movie was not fixed but influenced by emotional conditions, social relationships, and situational contexts, highlighting the importance of interaction and experience in moral development.
