Abstract
English speaking practice in EFL contexts is often limited by the lack of opportunities for interaction. The development of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) offers alternative spaces for learners to practice speaking. One of these spaces is HelloTalk, particularly its voice room feature, which allows users to engage in spoken communication with people from various countries. These interactions may create various learning experiences, including improvements and difficulties experienced by users during speaking practice. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate users’ experiences in English speaking practice through the HelloTalk voice room feature by identifying the level, difficulties factors, and improvements strategies. The researcher employed a quantitative approach with a survey design. The population of this study consisted of Indonesian HelloTalk users who choose English as their learning language, with an unknown population size. The sample size was determined using Lemeshow formula, resulting in 100 respondents. The respondents were selected using purposive sampling based on predetermined criteria, including Indonesian users aged 18-27 years old and actively using the HelloTalk voice room feature for practicing English. The instrument used was a questionnaire measured using Likert-scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS by employing descriptive statistics to obtain mean score and frequencies. The results of this study showed that users experienced high level of speaking practice in HelloTalk voice room feature (2.91). The difficulties experienced by users were mainly psychological (2.98), linguistic (2.92), and interactional factors (2.62). Furthermore, users applied several strategies to improve their speaking practice, particularly through developing knowledge of language and discourse (3.48) and core speaking skills (2.98). These results indicate that HelloTalk voice room provides opportunities for users to engage in speaking practice. this study suggest that HelloTalk voice room can be used as a supporting platform for English speaking practice.
