Abstract

The interesting material will increase students’ engangement to read. From many expert stated that most of the children get enthusiastic about reading narrative text. When they found books that related to their personal interest, it may increase students’ reading achievement. Based on the preliminary observation, the researcher also found that mostly of students felt unenganging to the teacher selected materials rather than self selected materials. So, here the researcher wants to examine about the theories from several expert about the effectiveness of Self Selected Reading (SSR Strateg) at vocational school students. The problem of research are: 1.) Is there any significantly effect of SSR strategy on students’ reading achievement at SMK NU Tulungagung. The objectives of the research were: 1.) To find out the significant effect of SSR strategy on students’ reading achievement to vocational students’ level This research use quasi experimental research design with non equivalent control group design because the researcher hasn’t authority to choose the sample. The sample was choosen by the English teacher or without randomization. The result is into numerical data. This research use test as instrument to collect sufficient data or information. The result showed on the data analysis, the researcher knows that sig. value smaller than sig level. Here, 0,000 < 0,05 it means that the alternative hyphotesis (Ha) is accepted and null hyphothesis (H0) is rejected. the mean of experiment class after taught by Self-Selected Reading (SSR) strategy 84.64 and mean of control class after being taught without SSR strategy (using conventional method) is 65.84 this indicate that the mean after taught by Self-Selected Reading (SSR) strategy is effective after taught without Self Selected Reading (SSR) strategy. Mean difference between both of those group is are 18.789, and the difference about 12.436 - 25.160 (lower and upper).Thus, it can conclude that taught by Self-Selected Reading (SSR) strategy on the students’ reading achievement for the tenth grade students at SMK NU Tulungagung is effective.So, this strategy will be appropriate to the many level of graders even in ii different type of school such as Elementary School, Junior High School, Senior High School, Vocational school and Undergraduates’ Students.
