Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, Talking Chips, Writing Achievement Writing is one of skills in English which have to be learned by students in the senior high school. The type of text which must be learned by students in senior high school is writing analytical exposition text. One of the problems when the students writing analytical exposition text is find the ideas to support the topic and develop the argument paragraph. The teacher should choose the appropriate technique in teaching writing which can help the students get many ideas which it can be used to develop the argument paragraph and the appropriate technique to help the students get many ideas is talking chips. Talking chips is one of cooperative learning methods. In previous studies talking chips were effectived used in teaching speaking. In talking chips, the students demand to share their opinion about the topic use media called chips. In the application of talking chips, students were divided into some groups and the all of students in the group had the chips which if they wanted to give opinion they have to put the chips on the center of table. The formulation of the research problem “Is there any significant effect of using talking chips on students’ achievement in writing analytical exposition text at MAN 1 Tulungagung”? The purpose of the research problem was to find out if there is the significant effect of using talking chips on students’ achievement in writing analytical exposition text at MAN 1 Tulungagung. Research Method applied in this study included: 1) the research design in this research was quasi experimental design with quantitative approach in the form of two groups pre-test and post-test in which one group becomes experimental and the other becomes control group, 2) the population of this research was all of second grade students at MAN 1 Tulungagung which consist of nine classes and the total of the students were 339, 3) the sample was 11 MIA U1 as experimental group which consist of 27 students and 11 MIA U2 as control group which consist of 28 students, 4) the variable were independent and dependent variable. Independent variable was talking chips and dependent variable was the students’ achievement in writing analytical exposition text, 5) the research instrument was test, 6) the data analysis was using Independent Sample T-test with SPSS 16.00. The result showed that the students’ mean score in experimental group before being taught using by talking chips was 66.65 and the students’ mean score after being taught using by talking chips was 80.56. In the control group also there is improvement mean score from 63 became 65. However, the improvement in experimental group was higher than control group. In addition, the result of the statistical computation used Independent Sample T-test with SPSS 16.00, showed that the significance value is 0.00. It means that the significance value is smaller than the significance level (0.00 < 0.05). The result of significance value indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means there was a significant effect of using talking chips on students’ achievement in writing analytical exposition text at MAN 1 Tulungagung. In the other words, talking chips can be used as alternative technique in teaching writing especially in writing analytical exposition.
