Keywords: Effectiveness, Peer-Assited Learning Strategy, Reading Comprehension Reading is becoming an important need for students to get knowledge from global information which is mostly written in English. Reading also as an additional tool of communication. Thus, to get many information do not just read the text but they have to comprehend the text. Sometimes to read the text the students to find out some difficulties, like they lack of vocabulary and cannot find the main idea in text. To motivate students become interesting in reading, the researcher used on form of cooperative learning strategy for teaching reading comprehension that is Peer-Assisted Learning Strategy. This strategy helps students became more active and understanding the meaning of the text easily because it can increase the vocabulary of students and also help students to find mind idea in the text. The formulation of the research problem was: 1) How is the effect of using peer-assisted learning strategy for reading comprehension at the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru in academic year 2017/2018? 2) Is there any significant different achievement on students’ reading comprehension at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Ngantru in academic year 2017/2018 in reading descriptive text when they are taught by using peer-assisted learning strategy and those are taught without using peer-assisted learning strategy? The purposes of this research was to analyze whether there is any significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Peer-Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung. The research method of this research used quantitative approach with quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung consisting of 2 classes. The samples are 7 B class (control group) and 7 E class (experimental group) of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung. Class 7 B consists of 32 students while 7 E class consists of 30 students. The research instrument was test (pre-test and post-test). The technique of data analysis used Independent Sample T-test which was used to find out the difference of students’ mean score in reading comprehension between the experimental class and control class by using software IBM SPSS Statistic v.20 for windows. The result showed that in experiment class the students mean score in reading comprehension before they are taught by using PALS strategy (pre-test) was 68.00. While the students’ score in reading comprehension after they are taught by using PALS strategy (post-test) was 84.50. The significant value was 0.004, whereas with significant level was 0.05. It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which state that there is significant different score of the students reading comprehension before and after being taught by using PALS strategy of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung was accepted. The null hypothesis (Ho) which state that there is no significant different score of the students reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Peer-Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) strategy of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Ngantru Tulungagung was rejected. It could be conclude that using Peer-Assisted Learning Strategy (PALS) strategy was effective used in teaching reading comprehension on descriptive text.
