English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M. Pd. Keywords: speaking anxiety, causes of speaking anxiety, strategies to reduce speaking anxiety Speaking is considered as important and difficult skill in English language learning . It is important because it is used for communication in process of teaching and learning. And it becomes difficult skill because it involves many aspects such as pronunciation, fluency, grammar, etc. However, to be master of English the students should speak fluently and clearly in order to make the partner of speaking understand what the meaning is about. During the process of teaching and learning in classroom interaction, the active and passive students faced many problems and one of them is speaking anxiety. Anxiety has the meaning of subjective feelings relating an arousal of automatic nervous system, such as tension, apprehension, nervousness, and worry. Every student has the different causes of speaking anxiety. In order to reduce their speaking anxiety, the students need to use and apply the suitable strategies. The formulation of the research problems are: 1) How does the description of speaking anxiety encountered by sixth semester students of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung? and 2) How do six semester students of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung overcome their speaking anxiety?? The purposes of the research are : 1) To identify the description of speaking anxiety encountered by sixth semester students of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung and 2) To identify the way of overcoming speaking anxiety encountered by sixth semester students of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung. Research method: 1) the research design in this research was descriptive design with qualitative approach, 2) the subjects of this research were the active and passive students from the sixth semester students of English Department. The procedures of collecting data were : 1) the researcher collected data through doing in-depth interview, participant observation, documentation of study, and field notes, 2) the researcher chose the subjects, interviewed them, transcribed the result of interview, selected and focused on the data related to the research problems, 3) the researcher showed the selected data in the form of description, 4) draw conclusion based on the analyzed data. The result showed that the cause of speaking anxiety during classroom interaction were: different types of tasks, the role of language lecturer, fear of making mistake, self-perception, gap of competence, and limited exposure to English. And the strategies that is used by the students to overcome their speaking anxiety were preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and knowing our audience. The researcher also found the students’ reason of using those various strategies. Preparation is used because the students should prepare everything before the class. Without preparation, everything will be worse. Relaxation is used because when the students’ body is relax, it can reduce speaking anxiety. Positive thinking is used because it makes the speaking performance will be good. Peer seeking is used because the students can get advice and suggestion about their difficulty from their friend. And the last knowing our audience is used because it makes the students are ready to speak up with an expert or common people.
