Abstract

ABSTRACT Mahsunah, Durotun (1723143041). 2018 The Effectiveness of Using Fishbone Method on Students’ Writing Achievement of Descriptive Text at the First Grade of SMK PGRI 1 Tulungagung. Thesis of English Education Department at Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers’ Training State Islamic Institute Studies (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keyword : Students’ Writing Achievement, Fishbone Method, Descriptive Text. Teaching writing is making students produce text correctly by using a good generic structure and language feature, in this research especially in descriptive text. Descriptive text is a text that describe the characteristic of person, place, or particular things the way it is. One of method that is used to teach writing descriptive is by using fishbone method. Fishbone method is brainstorming tool need to identify potential root cause to problem. Fishbone method will help students to determine the cause and the effect of one problem statement by using a model like a skeleton of a fish. In this research, the writer is interested in conducting the tittle about The Effectiveness of Using Fishbone Method on Students’ Writing Achievement of Descriptive Text at the First Grade of SMK PGRI 1 Tulungagung. The formulation of the research problem: 1) How is the students’ writing achievement before being taught by using fishbone method?, 2) How is the students’ writing achievement after being taught by using fishbone method?, 3) Is there any significant difference of the students’ writing achievement between before and after being taught by using fishbone method? The purpose of the research: 1) Find out the students’ writing achievement before being taught by using fishbone method. 2) Find out the students’ writing achievement after being taught by using fishbone method. 3) Find out the significant difference of the students’ writing achievement between before and after being taught by using fishbone method. Research method used in this study was quantitative method. The research design in this study was experimental design with quantitative approach by using Quasi- Experimental Design with Nonrandomized Control group, pretest – posttest design. The population of this study was the whole of the first grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Tulungagung that consist of 247 students, the sample were X MP 2 class that consisting 41 students as experimental class and X AK1 class that consisting of 37 students as control class. The research instrument was test. In this research the data was analyze by using t-test, with the helped of SPSS Windows 16.0. The result showed that the mean achievement of the experimental group was higher than the mean achievement of the control group. While, the gain achievement of experimental class was 16.81 and gain achievement of control class was 7.89. The result of the research findings, the significant level (sig) is 0.002, and it is lower than 0.05 (0.002 < 0.05). it was found that there is significant difference of students achievement between before and after who are taught by using fishbone method and those who are not. The null hypothesis stated that there is no significant difference on the students’ writing achievement who are taught before using fishbone method and after using fishbone method. Alternative hypothesis stated that accepted in other word there is an effectiveness of using fishbone method for teaching descriptive text at SMK PGRI 1 Tulungagung. It means that teaching using fishbone method are effective.
