Abstract

English is one of foreign language which is learned in our country. As foreign language, it has many problem faced by Indonesian students, especially in learning vocabulary. They felt bored and are not interested in following English class, because the teacher teaches by same way and same strategy in every meeting. By learning vocabulary, students will be able to communicate in English. One of teaching media in vocabulary learning is nursery rhyme video. Nursery rhyme is a short rhyme for children that often tell a story. Why choose this media because nursery rhyme expose students to relatively more complex word such as spool, eagle, mulberry, thumb, puddle, together, clock, nimble and hundreds more. These are words that are unlikely to feature in their regular vocabulary and help them to learn new word and proper pronounciation, making them better speakers from young age, that nursery rhyme video can be effectiveness to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery before being taught using nursery rhyme video? 2) How is students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery after being taught using nursery rhyme video? 3) Is there any significance difference in students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery before and after being taught using nursery rhyme video? The objectives of the research were: 1) to know the students achievement in vocabulary mastery before being taught using nursery rhyme video. 2) to know he students achievement in vocabulary mastery after being taught using nursery rhyme video. 3) to know whether there is significance difference in students achievement vocabulary mastery before being taught using nursery rhyme video. This research is experimental design with quantitative approach. In this study the research design used by the researcher is pre-experimental design in the form of one group pre-test and post-test. The population of this study was all students of second grade of MTs Darul Falah Bendiljati Sumbergempol. The sample of the research is VIII-A class which consist of 32 students. The instruments used in this research were vocabulary test (pre-test and post-test). The data analysis was using t-test. The research finding in this research are the scores of vocabulary before being taught by using nursery rhyme video and after being taught by using nursery rhyme video the result showed that the mean of total scores of students vocabulary achievement before being taught using nursery rhyme video is 12,2. While the mean of total of scores students vocabulary after they are taught using nursery rhyme video is 16,4. It was proved with t-test analysis that use by the researcher can be shown the result t-count = 8,486. The value of “t” on the t score table t 5%=1,696. So, it is known that t-count is bigger than t-table (t-count > t-table) = (8,486>1,696). Based on the result above, alternative hypothesis (Ha) states there is significance difference scores of students vocabulary achievement by using nursery rhyme video is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) that states there is no significance difference score of students’ vocabulary achievement is rejected. Finally it can be concluded that nursery rhyme video is effective media in teaching English vocabulary to junior high school, especially for second grade students of MTs Darul Falah Bendiljati Sumbergempol
