English Education Departement. State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung. Advisor: DwiAstutiWahyuNurhayati, SS., M.Pd. Keywords: pronunciation, difficulty, drilling, audiovisual This thesis focuses on investigating students’ difficulties in pronouncing words especially in segmental aspects (consonant, vowel, and diphthong), factor affecting it, and also strategy used by the lecturer in teaching English pronunciation. The research method of this study is by using descriptive qualitative. The data sources are the lecturer of English pronunciation practice class in IAIN Tulungagung and students of it. The instrument used for collecting data are by class observation and interview. The data analysis is by using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing & verification. By this research, researcher hopes that the lecturer can create creative and suitable strategy for teaching pronunciation and also students can pay attention more about their pronunciation in speaking activity. This research finds the strategy used by lecturer, those are by using drilling and audiovisual. The students have difficulties in segmental aspects such as consonant, vowel and diphthong. Those are caused English pronunciation students cannot differentiate the similar sound of the words, hearing problem, strange words, speech organs fossilisation, and unmemorable words’ phonetic transcription. So, it can be concluded that the students stayed in university level still have difficulties in pronouncing words because of several factors. Then, the strategy used by the lecturers play the crucial roles to improve students’ ability of English pronunciation. The monotonous strategy can make students feel bored and vise versa. So that is way, the students must try to minimize their problems, while the lecturer must conduct need analysis based on students’ needs in order to the lecturer can create the suitable strategy in teaching English pronunciation.
