Abstract
Keywords: effectiveness, jigsaw, narrative text English is one of the international languages that are taught from elementary level to university level. There are four skills in English that have to be mastered by the students, one of them is reading. In teaching reading, teacher usually has problem in solving the students’ difficulties such as difficult words, difficult to find the information from the text, and difficult to get the conclusion from the text. One of technique that can be used in teaching reading is jigsaw. Jigsaw is one of cooperative learning method. In jigsaw, students learn to understand reading passage in a group. In jigsaw are divided into some groups that is consists of students who have difference achievement. Students from different group who get the same topic will discuss together in expert group. After that, they have to back to the basic group and tell the result to the teammates. The formulations of this research are: 1) How is the students’ achievement in reading narrative text before they are taught using jigsaw technique? 2) How is the students’ achievement in reading narrative text after they are taught using jigsaw technique? 3) Is there any significant effect of using jigsaw technique on students’ achievement in reading narrative text? The purposes of this research are: 1) To know the students’ achievement in reading narrative text before they are taught using jigsaw technique. 2) To know the students’ achievement in reading narrative text after they are taught using jigsaw technique. 3) To know if there is any significant effect of using jigsaw technique on students’ achievement in reading narrative text. Research methodology: 1) Research design of this research is experimental design with quantitative approach. 2) Population was all students of second year at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol Tulungagung. 3) Sample was VIIID Class. 4) Instrument that is used in this research is test. 5) Data analysis of this research is using T – test, the formula as follow: Md t = From this research, the researcher gets the mean score of students’ achievement in reading narrative text before they are taught using jigsaw technique is 72, while the mean score of students’ achievement in reading narrative text after they are taught using jigsaw is 86. The researcher used the formula above in accounting the tcount, and the result showed that tcount is 5. 53 while ttable with significant level 5% and degree of freedom (42) is 2. 02. From that result, it is concluded that tcount is greater than ttable (tcount > ttable), so, Ha is accepted. Conclusion of this research based on the result above is alternative hypothesis (Ha) that states that there is significant effect of using jigsaw technique on students’ achievement in reading narrative text is accepted, while null hypothesis (Ho) that states that there is no significant effect of using jigsaw technique on students’ achievement in reading narrative text is rejected.
