Abstract
Key Words: Series Picture, Teaching Learning Speaking English as International Language has an important role to interact, converse, and share to other people in the world. In teaching English speaking to adolescent learner, the teacher must be able to select the appropriate method and make them interested in it. One of the alternative methods is series picture. This method enjoys them in studying speaking. Based on the background above, the research problems are formulated as follows: (1) How does the teacher use series picture in teaching speaking? (2) What are the problems faced by the students in learning speaking using series picture? (3) What are the solutions taken by the teacher to solve the students’ problems? The objectives of the study are: (1) To know the way of teacher in teaching speaking using series picture. (2) To know the problems faced by the students in learning speaking using series picture. (3) To know the solutions taken by the teacher to solve the students’ problems. The research is descriptive that only designed to describe teaching speaking by using series picture. The study was also qualitative design. The subjects of this study are teacher and students at eight-A grader of UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Sumbergempol. The research instruments consist of observation, interview, and documentation. In addition, to check the trustworthiness of the data, the writer also used triangulation. After analyzing the data, it can be concluded: (1) The way of teacher to teach speaking using series picture is by asking the students to describe what are the series picture about. The students are divided in groups. Then, each group was given the same series picture to be told by them. Next, they have to present their tasks in front of the class. (2) The problems faced by the students in learning speaking using series picture are: (a) need a lot of times to tell what the series pictures are about, (b) find the difficult vocabularies related to the story in series picture, (c) worried to make mistakes when they are speaking, (d) nervousness. (3) the solutions taken by the teacher to solve the problems are: (a) give the opportunity to the students to do the task in groups, (b) Ask the students to look for the difficult vocabularies in the dictionary or write them in the blackboard if necessary, (c) become a good model, (d) always encourage the student to be confident. At last, it is hoped that the result of this study can be used as input for English teacher to improve her knowledge in teaching English speaking. The writer gives suggestion to: (1) the English teacher. It is better to speak English in the classroom to make the students used to in listening and practicing English, (2) the reader. The result of this study is expected become meaningfulness approach for others.
