ABSTRACT Hutomo, Wildan Prasetyo. Student Registered Number. 1723143183. 2019. An Analysis of Subtitling Strategy Used in The Martian Movie. Thesis. English Education Departmen. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Muhammad Basuni, M.Pd. Keyword: Subtitle, Subtitle Strategy. Subtitle is textual versions of the translated dialogue, which is not in films only, but also in television programs. This is to help audience understand the meaning of the dialogue in the foreign language. In subtitling dialogue, there are ten strategies. They are expansion, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, dislocation, condensation, decimation, deletion, and resignation. The formulation of the research problems are what kinds of subtitling strategy were found in The Martian movie? And which strategy was mostly occurred in the subtitling The Martian movie? The objectives of this research are to describe the subtitle strategies used by the translator in The Martian movie. And to analyze the mostly used subtitling strategy to translate script of The Martian movie into Indonesian. The research design in this research was quantitative research in the type of descriptive method. The data were collected from movie script and the transcription of the subtitles on The Martian movie. In collecting data, the researcher made a table to arrange the movie script and subtitle text, sentence by sentence and giving check mark to the table. To analyze data, the researcher read the movie script and subtitle text and giving checklist to the table then the researcher count which strategy that mostly used. The findings of the research show that there are six subtitling strategies used in the movie. They are paraphrase, transfer, imitation, condensation, decimation, and deletion. The unused subtitling strategies are resignation, expansion, transcription, and dislocation. The most used strategy is transfer strategy, it is 950 (74.74%) data. Other strategies are paraphrase was 152 (11.96%) data, imitation was 134 (10.54%) data, condensation 25 (1.97%) data, decimation 4 (0.31%), and deletion 6 (0.47%).
