Abstract
When it says language in use it means sentences, clauses or linguistic units, such as conversational exchanges or written text. Text cannot be said intact reading without cohesion because the text is less isolated element of that, which is not related to each other. This relationship implies the continuity between ones sentences to another. Cohesion refers to the resources within language that provide continuity in a text, above and over that is provided by clause structures and clause complexes. A book compilation of fairytales by “Brothers Grimm” is an appropriate object for analyzing grammatical cohesion because this fairytales are included spoken and written language that may contain some of type cohesion Reference, Substitution, Elipsis and Conjunction. So in this study, the researcher carries out the study entitled “Grammatical Cohesion in Brothers Grimm’s Fairytales”. The objectives of this study are (1) To find out the types of grammatical cohesion used in Brothers Grimm’s Fairytales. (2) To know the different grammatical cohesion used in Brothers Grimm’s Fairytales. In this study, the researcher used content analysis techniques. The data are form of cohesion, type of grammatical cohesion and the different grammatical cohesion type used in the Brothers Grimm’s Fairytales” from animal and human tale. The data source is story script from “Brothers Grimm’s Fairytales”. The results of the study are showed 4 types grammatical cohesion in the “Brothers Grimm’s Fairytales” used in animal theme and human theme stories, are consisting of Reference, Substitution, Elipsis, and Conjunction. In animal tale, it is found 377 reference, 1 substitution, 2 elipsis, and 235 conjunctions. In human tale, it is found 543 references, 1 substitution, 156 conjunctions, and 0 elipsis. In this Fairytale, there is no different in using the grammatical cohesion to build the story. The writers use the same type of grammatical cohesion to build two of different theme. Therefore by the highest number of reference the writer concludes that references are used to refer to the character in story of fairytale because in fairytale they are use the third point of view and the writer would like to connect ideas within the text to make the readers easy to understand. Then, the writer would like to make that fairytale more interesting for the readers.
