Lestari, Indah. Student Registered Number. 12203183002. 2022. The Effectiveness of Group Chat Discussion on WhatsApp toward The Seventh Graders’ Vocabulary Mastery at SMPN 2 Pakel Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M. Pd. Keywords: WhatsApp, Group Discussion, Vocabulary Learning vocabulary is the first step in learning English. Studying in group discussions will be effective in students' vocabulary mastery. But during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has banned all schools from carrying out face-to-face learning and has ordered them to conduct online learning. At this time, the most commonly used tools that can help in the online learning process are smartphones and most of them carry out learning activities using the WhatsApp application that can be accessed via smartphones. WhatsApp is an application on a smartphone that provides group chats that can be used for online learning. Those experts also explained that the WhatsApp application was very useful for learning English. So the researchers researched group discussion chats on WhatsApp so that learning English can be done effectively during the pandemic. This research was conducted to answer the questions of the research problem; Is there any effect of using group chat discussion on WhatsApp toward the seventh graders’ vocabulary mastery at SMPN 2 Pakel Tulungagung? The purpose of this study is to find evidence of whether group chat discussions on WhatsApp are effective or not on the vocabulary mastery of 7th-grade students at SMPN 2 Pakel Tulungagung. This research design is a pre-experimental research design. The population of this study was seventh-grade students of SMPN 2 Pakel Tulungagung. The sample of this study used convenience sampling and got class 7C which consisted of 23 students. The research instrument used was a test. The stages carried out by the researcher were pre-test, treatment, and post-test. This study analysed the data using the Wilcoxon Test with SPSS 25. Based on calculations using the Wilcoxon test, the significance value is 0.038 which is lower than 0.05 (0.038 <0.05). It can be said that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, which means that there is the effectiveness of using group chat discussions on WhatsApp before and after treatment. There is also a mean difference in the students' pre-test and post-test scores. The mean score of the students' pre-test was 53.56 and the post-test was 62.60. This means that the mean score of students before being taught using group discussion chats on WhatsApp is lower than after. Thus, it can be said that group chat discussions on WhatsApp are effective on the vocabulary mastery of 7th-grade students at SMPN 2 Pakel Tulungagung, and group chat discussions on WhatsApp can be used as alternative media for learning during a pandemic.
