Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword: Speaking, Anxiety, Strategies. Speaking is one of the important English skills to be mastered by students to have a good communication during learning process. However, still a lot of students felt that speaking is a difficult skill. The problem is, English is not students’ mother tongue language, it made them difficult and afraid of making mistake in pronunciation or in term of grammar. Another factor come from students itself. Students often feel afraid, worry, shy and nervous when they asked to speak. What students felt is a psychological phenomenon which is called as anxiety. “Teacher and students consider that anxiety is the main obstacle to speak foreign language.” The purpose of this research is to find out the strategies to overcome students’ speaking anxiety. The subject of this research was 50 students of international master degree at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. In this study, the researcher used qualitative design. To get the data, the researcher distributed questionnaire to 50 respondents who were chosen by purposive sampling. Afterwards, the researcher conducting interviews with 5 informants. To analyze the data, the researcher using Miles and Huberman (1994) model which describe there are three stages of analysis, namely reducing data, data display and conclusion drawing. The result of this study, the factor that caused them anxious are negative feeling, lack of preparation, and the differences culture and characteristic of each student which triggered them to feel insecure and less confident. To overcome their problem in anxiety, there are five strategies they used to reduce their anxiety. The strategies are, the students need to have a good preparation, praying before performance to relax their mind and body, positive thinking, peer seeking to practice their skills and resignation or awareness of changing their bad habits into the good one.
