State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, SS.,M.Pd. Keywords: Anxiety, Speaking, Strategies Tension, fear, nervousness and worry associated with the excitability of the autonomic nervous system are subjective feelings called anxiety. Mastering speaking skills, anxiety is one of the affective variables that must be considered. Many students learning a foreign language experience anxiety while in class, and this can affect their ability to speak. Therefore, it is important to examine anxiety in English speaking performance. Anxiety can1be an inhibiting factor that prevents students from demonstrating their competence. The purpose of this study is to know the factors that cause students' anxiety when learning speaking skills at MA Ma'arif Ponggok Blitar and the strategies students use to reduce anxiety when learning speaking skills at MA Ma'arif Ponggok Blitar. This study applied qualitative method with case study research design. A descriptive qualitative approach was used in this study. The tenth grade at MA Ma'arif Ponggok Blitar became the research location. The subject of this study 2 students who have hight anxiety level such as fear, nervous worry. Data were collected through observation and interviews. Researcher conducted interviews to find out the causes of anxiety and students' strategies to deal with it. Observation was used to obtain additional data about the condition of students in the classroom. Data analysis was carried out with three stages of data analysis techniques by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions and verification. The findings of this study show that the factors that causing students' anxiety in speaking are (1) communication apprehension, where students have low intelligence and limited speaking ability, (2) test anxiety when facing speaking tests for fear of failure, (3) fear of negative evaluation, where students feel anxious for fear of being laughed at by friends or teachers when making mistakes, and (4) self-perception, where students feel anxious because they feel incapable in English. Meanwhile, the three strategies used by tenth grade students at MA Ma'arif Ponggok Blitar to over come anxiety when speaking English are (1) preparation strategies, (2) relaxation strategies and (3) positive thinking.
