Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: correlation, intensity, social media, understanding, vocabulary In this era, social media is widely accessed by almost everyone of all ages in various countries, including Indonesia. With a relatively high average intensity of daily use, social media has the potential to become a medium for students to acquire new English vocabularies. This research focuses on finding out whether there is a correlation between students' intensity in accessing social media and their understanding of viral English words. The objective of this research was to know the correlation between second-year English Education Department students’ intensity in accessing social media and their understanding of viral English words at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. To prove this, the researcher applied a correlational design using a quantitative approach. The population of this research comprises all second-year students of the English Education Department. The sample needed for the questionnaire was 50 respondents who were collected through purposive sampling and met the requirement to access social media every day who were willing to be used as the sample. Then, the result of the questionnaire was categorized by the level of intensity in accessing social media and it was found that there were 10 students categorized as having high intensity in accessing social media. Hence, the sample of this research was 10 of second-year English Education Department. The correlation coefficient is calculated using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Formula in the SPSS 25.00 program. In this research, the results of the Product Moment Correlation Formula correlation analysis showed that the correlation coefficient value is 0.490. Thus, the H0 was not rejected. It can be concluded that there is a positive correlation between the intensity of second-year students of the English Education Department in accessing social media and their understanding of viral words in English. Based on the correlation coefficient category, with rcount = 0.490, it indicates that the correlation between students' intensity in accessing social media (X) and their understanding of Viral English words (Y) is categorized as "moderately correlated".
